Nainital, the charming Himalayan lake town, is a picture-postcard perfect hill-station and one of the most popular in Northern India. Commonly known as the ‘Lake District’, Nainital is nestled high up in the Kumaon Himalayas at an altitude of around 2,000 m above sea level. This beautiful town in surrounded by seven hills, popularly known as ‘Sapta-Shring’ – Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi-Bandi, Naina, Alma, Lariya-Kanta and Sher-Ka-Danda. The majestic mountains and the sparkling waters of the lake add an immense lot to the beauty of the town.  The town is centred around the emerald mountain lake Naini, which on most days is dotted with colourful sailboats. According to mythology, the lake is believed to have been formed when the eyes of goddess “Sati” fell at this spot while her body was being carried by Lord Shiva after her death. 

The summer capital of the United Provinces during the British era, the town has a strong colonial heritage with vibrant clusters of villas and bungalows. Homesick Britishers used to flock to this quaint town spread over a forested valley. It is also known for the revered Naina Devi temple, which stands on the edge of the lake. Nainital is not only a famous tourist destination but is also known for its prestigious educational institutions and schools, which have stood since the British era.

Naina Devi Temple

A well known Shakti Peeths of Hindu religion, Naina Devi Temple is sacred place of great devotion in Nainital. Goddess Naina Devi is the diety of Naina Devi Temple and located at northern end of famous Nainital Lake. Goddess in this holy temple is represented by her two eyes. Devotees from far away place comes here to take blessing of Maa Naina Devi. The temple is located atop the Naina hillock near the Naini Lake, and draws thousands of devotees every year. There are many shops in close proximity to the Naina Devi Temple from where one can buy the prasad and pooja items.

Naina Peak

Naina Peak is highest hill top and one of the the famous tourist spots in Nainital. This peak is also called as China Peak and Cheena Peak by locals in Naintal. Due to high altitude and lush green forest path, Naina Peak is favourite place in Nainital for trekking among travellers. Naina Peak offers the splendid Bird’s eye view of the Nainital town, the Himalayas and also the vast expanses of the Kumaon region. It is a bliss for people who love walking. Kainchi Dham

Kainchi is a beautiful secluded mountain ashram located in the Kumaon Hills in Uttarakand. The first temple was inaugurated in June 1964. It is approximately 38 km from Nainital. Many hundreds of people visit the temples here every day, in season. Rules are strictly enforced and individuals staying at the ashram are required to participate in morning and evening arati. The ashram is closed for a large portion of the year, because of the bone chilling cold in this area.

Nainital Zoo

Nainital Zoo is one of the best attraction for wildlife lovers in Nainital. Officially named as Bharat Ratna Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo Nainital, this well maintained zoo of Uttarakhand state. Covering a small green area of 4.693 Hectares, Nainital Zoo is the home of numerous endangered species, many of which are adopted by individuals and animal organizations. This high altitude zoo is located at the height of 2100 mtrs which makes this zoo a favourable place for many animals and birds. Locally called as ‘Sher ka Danda’, Nainital Zoo is located at hill slope in Nainital.

The Mall Road, Nainital

The Mall Road is a most popular name in Nainital city. A busiest road in day time, The Mall Road runs side by side of the Nainital Lake. Britishers constructed The Mall Road which passes through the centre of Nainital and connects two main ends of Nainital city, Mallital and Tallital Inspite officially renamed as Govind Ballabh Pant Marg, the Mall road still locally called and famous by its previous name. Tourists and locals likes to walk on the Mall to enjoy the beauty of Naini Lake mostly in the evening.
